Red Root (Blutwurz)

A Blutwurz spirit is a traditional digestif and herbal spirit in Southern Germany, made from the root of the tormentil plant, and had been known since the Middle Ages for its medicinal characteristics.

The roots, that when cut turn red, are macerated to extract their tannins and bitter compounds, which give the spirit a tart, bitter, spicy flavour with notes of cinnamon and cardamom. 

Our distinctive blend builds on our Apple Fruit Brandy, enhanced with a hint of vanilla and rounded off with a beautiful Victorian honey.

The Red Rood is created in homage to our long time family friend and mentor, Richard Burger who first introduced us to the spirit over 20 years ago.

Its tangy, sweet character makes it the perfect companion to a classic charcuterie spread and an ideal finish to a shared meal with family and friends. Or even try it in a Blutsour (Sour Blood) cocktail.
